I can't believe it took me so long to pick up a disc by Angie Stone. I always love her released singles & videos but until this year, never bought one of her solo albums. I love the statement in the Amazon review that listeners must recognize the fact that we're listening to a "grown-azz woman" who is in control of her sound & song content.I love her soulful voice and the fact that obviously she tried to incorporate the old school '70s sound throughout the album. The tracks that I've grown to love are:NO MORE RAIN - love the reworking of the sampleLIFE STORY - very melodic trackCOULDA BEEN YOU - nice duetBONE 2 PIC WIT U - really pretty melody throughout the trackGREEN GRASS VAPORS - makes me dance around the room (although the lyrics are a tad bit monotonous)Overall I'd highly recommend this disc to those seeking neo-soul music sung by one of the better voices in r&b today.
It's such a great album. I feel so ashamed that I didn't know who Angie Stone was until I saw the music video for "I Wanna Thank Ya", I loved the song so much I bought it on iTunes. Then I decided to buy her first album, Black Diamond. I love every song, but especially "Everyday" and "Trouble Man". If this album is this good, Mahogany Soul must be just as good, if not better, so now I'm going to buy that album.
Even though I purchased this CD recently, I know that I should've bought it earlier. Angie is very talented, and she truly has a wonderful voice. No doubt, the woman has the power of soul music.
I love the vibe that this album carries, so sacred yet in perfect reach for the public, personalized yet generalized. This album is full of soul and is a wake up call to me. Where did she come from. I look forward to keeping my eyes peeled for all next moves of hers. Please Ms.Angie Stone, keep it coming.
It has really nice lyrics and it has thatsmooth groove that really is abig part of what makesStone sound so refreshing and new. Should provenherself to an above average song writer and singer. No, she doesn't talk about showing her butt or aboutbeing a gangsta. Oddly enough, as much as I enjoyed her version of "Holding Back The Years" I never really give her first albuma look. but it fits really well with how Stone sings on the song.Another standout track is the track Love Junkie.
You know, greatartists like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, PattyLabelle and Glady's Knight and such. I first heard of this soul sista on the Love and Basketball soundtrack back a few years ago. Then we get hersong "Everyday" with another great soul singer D'Angelo and it just sounds awesome. All theother songs pretty good aswell. She's a woman that sings with souland you actually "feel" the music.
It kind of has a hip hop type of sound to it. Not alot of fillerhear folks. That is until now.Angie Stone is abit of a throw back to the days whenthe soul was really sung with soul. Thesong has such an awesome funky beat that is sure tostick in your head for quite a while. It's easy to seeshe's not some woman singing to do her job.
Instead, she is doing what she loves to do.Her single "No More Rain" is clearly the best track onthe album. While thelyrics probably aren't all that great, Angie's soulful voice ALONE is enough to attract you to thissong. There are some other standout tracks such as: LiveStory, Man Loves His Money and Just A Pimp. But with such a soulful voice it'shard to call anything she does filler.
